  1. Bjork: Vespertine I was very slow to buy the "swan lady"'s new cd. but as soon as I heard it I knew the days of Debut and Post were over. Vespertine is a graceful and beautful as a well...swan but I wish the b-side "verandi" had been on it.
  2. White Stripes: White Blood Cells If this doesn't kick blink-182 and Sum-41 and Staind's little kiddy rock's asses than I don't know what does.
  3. Radiohead: Amnesiac I hated Pulk/Pull Revolving Doors (too much Aphex Twin from Thom than I can handle) and not reall a worther follow up to the in my opinion epic Kid A, but not bad.
  4. The Avalanches: Since I Left You If this isn't funnier than D-12 and slicker than Eminem than I'm crazy in the coconut.
  5. Spiritualized: Let it Come Down:

Gwee (Singapore)

  1. Sparklehorse- It's a Wonderful Life (A truly wondrous concoction of altcountry songs. Mark Linkous' best album yet)
  2. The Beta Band- Hot Shots II (a masterful LP from the cruelly-talented quartet)
  3. Four Tet- Pause (you won't be using the pause/stop button on this one)
  4. Sigur Ros- Agaetis Byrgun (It came out last year, but too good to leave off ANY list)
  5. The Strokes- Is This it? (Somehow, I feel they are over-rated but full of great tunes still)
  6. Bjork-Vespertine (The last track is Bjork's best song in her career)
  7. Kings of Convenience- Vs (Listen to KOC like you have never ever heard them before)
  8. The Avalanches- Since I Left You (A contender for best dance/hiphop/whatever album since Endtroducing)
  9. Ed Harcourt- Here Be Monsters (Slightly more talented than just about any british singer/songwriter out there today)
  10. Pete Yorn- musicforthemorningafter (a real revelation, if you buy only one packed-with-jaw-dropping-tunes album a year, make it this one)

Joe Hayes (Brooklyn, NY, USA)

  1. THE CLIENTELE - Suburban Light - This is going to be a surprise most of you and even kinda surprises me but when it comes down to it I have to be honest and say that this CD has re-emerged week after week in my life since early this year.
  2. DNTEL - Life is Full of Possibilities - If I had to pinpoint what kind of "electronic" music I purchase and what I find rewarding about electronic music, this album perfectly sums it up.
  3. THE SHINS - Oh, Inverted World - How many whose better - the Strokes or the Shins - arguments have I gotten in this year ? How many times have I been the only one whose said I thought the Shins were better?
  4. THE KINGSBURY MANX - Let You Down - This is a brilliant album. Depressing as hell, but brilliant. I bought it on a whim, kept reading consistent reviews about it. I guess sometimes that works.
  5. THE STROKES - Is this It ? - I wanna have sex in the backseat of my parents car along to this CD at the drive-in, before I die.
  6. TORTOISE - Standards - This is by far and large my favorite Tortoise record to date. It is the most interactive piece of music they've done.
  7. LALI PUNA - Scary World Theory - A.K.A. "Radiohead's favorite band", Lali Puna is what Ladytron could be if they weren't so caught up with their outfits.
  8. STEREOLAB - Sound Dust - So, they ditched that cute Moog player. Oh well, who knows if that had anything to do with this album, their best since "Dots and Loops" I think.
  9. MOVIOLA - Rumours of the Faithful - Another underrated and underpublicized band --- hailing from Columbus, Ohio. Yes, I'm serious.
  10. THE MERKIN DREAM - Merkin Dream - What was the last time you bought a CD because you just had a feeling about it and the cover art kinda looked cool? Well, the Merkin Dream was that CD for me this year. There is absolute little to no publicity about this one. I can't understand it.
  11. FRIDGE - Happiness - Longer songs, slighthy more dynamic and more live (wait, is it live?) instruments in the mix, conceptually better executed. Rhythmically intense.
  12. RADIOHEAD - Amnesiac - Newsflash. I'm officially on the Radiohead bandwagon. I never disliked them or anything and I don't have a complex about liking bands that have posters outside Tower Records, I was just kinda never got around to giving them a chance -- sort of like how I never got around to seeing Titantic until it aired as the Sunday night movie on network T.V.
  13. PINBACK - Blue Screen Life - This is a good record, despite being slower and bit less punchy than their startling debut. Contrary to what some ignorant and impatient critics say, this is not in the least over-melancholic or "emo".
  14. SUMMER HYMNS - A Celebratory Arm Gesture - These are guys make music that makes me long for things. . . like summer. duh ! This is some serious 60s infused (almost chamber-like at times) pop.
  15. N.E.R.D.(the Neptunes) - In Search of. . . - I'm trying not to be as white as last year with my top 25, but honestly this deserves every plug it gets. This is the best pop hip-hop I've heard in a long time.

Horakhti (Silver Spring, MD, USA)

  4. The Strokes: Is This It [New York proto-punk, the sequel; still rocks, despite all the hype]
  5. Radiohead: Amnesiac [another great album from one of the best]
  6. Rocket From the Crypt: Group Sounds [bring me the head, yeah]
  7. Gorky's Zygotic Mynci: How I Long To Feel That Summer In My Heart [nice, acoustic folk]
  8. Clinic!: Internal Wrangler [what a strange collection of VU-influenced songs]
  9. Califone: Roomsound [best alt-country since 16 Horespower's first]
  10. The Shins: Oh, Inverted World [melodic and pretty]

  2. The Avalanches - Since I Left You (fun. This is the music for driving, running. Genius music-collage makers!)

  5. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun (GORGEOUS melodies)

  7. The Strokes - Is This It (you bet - they are overrated for a reason - a quick listen, but so much fun!)

Josh McGregor (Alberta, Canada)

  1. Radiohead-Amnesiac: People who were disappointed with Amnesiac should just recognise that Kid A and Amnesiac are quite different, and both masterpieces in their own respects. "Pyramid Song" and "Dollars and Cents" are instant classics on this record.
  2. Radiohead-I Might Be Wrong(Live Recordings): Some might think that Radiohead's sound does not translate live; but have a listen to this live record, and these same people will find they were wrong.
  3. Tea Party-Interzone Mantras: Excellent, heavier album from one of my favourite bands. Dark enough to make it interesting, without overdoing it. The second track, "Angels" is superb.
  4. Elbow-Asleep In The Back: This is one of the very best debuts I have heard in a long time. Excellent album, and these guys will just keep getting better and better. It is a bittersweet, oftentimes angst-ridden album, but not in a heavy metal manner.
  5. Doves-Lost Souls: Very dynamic performance by this Manchester group. Every song has a distinct sound, and this album provides for an excellent listen.
  6. Muse-Origin Of Symmetry: A mixture of piano arpeggios and very heavy bass. This one just ROCKS! Excellent listen for those who enjoy intelligent heavy music.
  7. Mull Historical Society-Loss: Wacky, but intelligent music from this fellow from Mull, which is off the coast of Scotland. Excellent debut.
  8. Spiritualized-Let It Come Down: I love the instruments in this album. A smooth listen. The lush arrangements are refreshing.
  9. Travis-The Invisible Band: These guys are very basic rockers, but they manage to do it well. This album was quite enjoyable.
  10. Kent-Hagnesta Hill: These Swedish rockers do a great job on this album.

Rick Medland (Carleton Place, ON, Canada)

  1. Mercury Rev - all is dream - what a beautiful album, try not to think of the hurt you have ever felt in love during the first song, "the dark is rising"; a perfect exposition of melodrama and longing.
  2. the Strokes - is this it - apparently it is. these lads from NYC stroke me. the tunes are edgy and angular and memorable. cocky and brass.
  3. Zero 7 - simple things - soul music. cross St Germain, Burt Bacharach and Air. a wonderfully fluid album that speaks in hushed and muted tones with easy sophisticated confidence and assured sultry vocals.
  4. Fila Brazillia - another late night - two guys from Kingston Upon Hull in England defy easy categorization. think the intelligence and studio mastery of the best Steely Dan with the best ambient trance and beat has to offer.
  5. Groove Collective - it's all in your mind - a buncha rockin' funked out live players taking hip hop jazz into the cool lounge, early Quincy Jones era. freeform jams, boogies and bongos.
  6. the Avalanches - since i left you - samples that collage here and roll about there, adding up to the most original music you could imagine. the melodies flop and stick in your head like gummy bears.
  7. Sigur Ros - Agetis Byrjun - spooky music for ghosts in vast spaces. this icelandic bunch offer tunes from outer limits. do not play at a seance or on mind expanders.
  8. Gillian Welch - time (the revelator) - amazingly simple and effective emo-country that send the most genuine notes of sincerity and picking into your lobes. a throaty confident voice.
  9. Travis - the invisible band - great tunes and melodies. not near as good as their sophmore piece The Man Who. this record portrays joy as something sad and wistful not a mere rage against the machine...refreshingly refreshing.
  10. Ryan Adams - gold - i wasn't going to include this until i slipped it on the headphones...the production is a flawless repo of seventies music done right; hammond organ interludes and acoustic flourishes in all the right places - it's uncanny.

Roger Simonsen (Lincoln, NE, USA)

  1. low - things we lost in the fire (sustains itself throughout - get the vinyl with the two extra tracks -- they're great)
  2. mercury rev - all is dream (the best traditional pop/rock album of the year)
  3. plaid - double figure (the best electronic album of the year--thoroughly intrinsic, and almost making me regret selling "restproof clockwork" which i never could get in to)
  4. 310 - after all (dark, dubby, hallucinogens for a dark, dubby, year)
  5. orb - cydonia (especially after taping it and editing out about 5-10 minutes in the middle. oh, and switch the album version of once more for the single version)
  6. aphex twin - drukqs (i actually still haven't listened to it very much yet, but the piano pieces are one of the best takes on john cage that we've heard)
  7. david thomas and two pale boys - surf's up! (best david thomas release in a while, inspired me to pay $15.00 for an early 80's 2 track david thomas release (vocal performances) which also was a nice bit of imaginative listening. album title quite appropriate)
  8. to rococo rot and i sound - music is a hungry ghost (solid, peaceful, sensual, melodic, sensual, warm, clever, sensual, sensual electronica)
  9. hilmarsson, hilmar orn/sigur ros - angels of the universe (thumbs up. nothing new here but hilmar delivers ethereal new age without sounding like ethereal new age)
  10. matmos - a chance to cut is a chance to cure (let's face it i'm running out of selections for 2001 -- ask me again about 2001 in 2003. nevertheless, this is a fun one, and the liner notes are intriguing to more than just your average surgeon)

Nick Solsman (Columbus, OH, USA)

  1. Les Savy Fav - Rome (written upside down) - While this came out In late 2000, I discovered this amazing post-punk explosion (complete with digital trickery) near the beginning of this year. This 18-minute EP has gotten significantly more overall play in the last 12 months than my 2nd and 3rd (much longer) albums below combined. Addictive as Fuck.
  2. Mercury Rev - All is Dream - More Pure Beauty from the 1990s best band is another great leap forward. Much like Deserters Songs, but aimed for the stars, this album is full of sweeping crescendos, both orchestral and non, over the most emotional lyrics of the year which evoke (for me), childhood, and love in a world one cant understand. Genius
  3. Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You - This album is one I was led to believe from reviews to be one of the more difficult releases to get into, I was extremely surprised when I found it to be angular, but also immediately eerily familiar. If GYBE! were a punk band, it would sound like Terminus.
  4. New Pornographers - Mass Romantic - So fucking catchy
  5. The Strokes - Is This It - Ditto
  6. Radiohead - Amnesiac - The Genius of Radiohead has been extensively well stated elsewhere. This release has a couple of duds, but overall is more of the same. That is to say: musical genius.
  7. White Stripes - White Blood Cells - Hit and Miss, but much more of the former. Behind Les Savy Fav as the album I most felt like a rock star while screaming along to in the car.
  8. Mum - Yesterday was Dramatic - Today is OK - My Favorite Electronic Release of the year. Pure Electronic Lullabies.
  9. Super Furry Animals - Rings Around the World - More great music from SFA. Less Electronic tomfoolery added in the mix, but makes up for it in spades with orchestral arrangements they could afford for this release. Most Spectacularly on Run!, Christian, Run!
  10. Mouse on Mars - Idiology - So much shit going on!.and it works!.really good!

Casper Sorensen (Denmark)

  1. Tool - Lateralus (adds new territory to the word "heavy")
  2. The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra And Tra-La-La Band - Born Into Trouble As The Sparks Fly Upward

  4. Mercury Rev - All Is Dream
  5. Fugazi - The Argument
  6. Explosions In The Sky - Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever
  7. Spoon - Girls Can Tell
  8. Mm - Please Smile My Noise Bleed
  9. Lift To Experience - The Texas-Jerusalem Crossroads
  10. The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2
  11. Antenne - # 1 (Danish electronica, which is pretty great)
  12. Sparklehorse - It's A Wonderful Life
  13. Low - Things We Lost In The Fire
  14. Air - 10,000 Hz Legend
  15. Thau - Everything It Takes (also a Danish group, indierock)

Russ Thomas (Bristol, UK)

  1. GOLDFRAPP - Felt Mountain - Album of the year? Album of the decade, century, new millennium morelike... I'm amazed this isn't at the top of everyone's favourites of the year - to hear it is to adore it. Strictly speaking, this album was released late-2000, but it's lasted well over a year in my CD player. Oh, and they're absolutely the greatest live band I've EVER seen....
  2. BENT - Programmed to Love - Stunning collection of gorgeous Air-like tracks. Criminally ignored commercially, but full of absolutely fantastic would-be hit records.
  3. MIRWAIS - Production - Madonna's 'Music' producer comes up with a spiky, fun collection of Euro bleepy vocoder based pop. Quirky and rather fabulous.
  4. DAFT PUNK - Discovery - It's Daft Punk. Of course, it's breathtaking. In parts.
  5. FAITHLESS - Outrospective - Another great album from Rollo and company. Majestic, dark and downright menacing in parts, this is a wonderful record.
  6. ZERO 7 - Simple Things - An album for anyone who's been dizzyingly, ridiculously in love. And it sounds great to the rest of us, too.....
  7. ALPHA - Impossible Thrill - ...further proof that the future of music lives in Bristol.....
  8. LEMON JELLY - Lemon Jelly - Weird, wacky and wonderful.
  9. GROOVE ARMADA - Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub - Following up an album as fantastic as 'Vertigo' was never going to be easy, and whilst this uneven collection falls flat in places, onm the whole it's a grower. Play it again and again... see how it grows!
  10. DEPECHE MODE - Exciter - OK, this is no 'Black Celebration' or 'Music for the masses', but there are still glimpses on here as to why Martin Gore is the most cruelly underrated British songwriter ever.... meandering and tuneless in places, it surely marks the end of a wonderful career.... buy it, it's another one that creeps up on you like a cat burglar.
