As I had earlier suspected, the place that felt most new to me was the bathroom and especially the shower. Perhaps it's partially related to the fact that I'm physically naked and feel the most vulnerable in the shower, but I knew that it would take some getting used to. While brushing my teeth right before bed, I wandered about the apartment and looked over things a little more. I had a few things that still hadn't found a place where they sat well, but for the most part things were put away.
I finished with my teeth and went ahead and flossed them for good measure, then shut out the light and made my way to my new bedroom in the dark. A light from outside was shining in through one of the windows and it partially illuminated the room, making it easier for me to maneuver in the new environment. When I laid down, the bed was the same as it had always been. I had spent one night away from it, but it felt as comfortable as ever. Like the night before, I simply laid there in the dark for awhile and listened to the sounds that the apartment was making. I could hear the refrigerator humming slightly and cars go by quietly every once in awhile outside, and I could even faintly make out the soft ticking of my clock in the next room. There was one thing that was bothering me, though. Even after spending all day in the apartment, I hadn't closed any of the blinds and now the same light that had brightened my path from the bathroom was shining ever so slightly in my eyes. At first I tried to ignore it, not wanting to get up and move again after having settled in, but eventually I stood up on my bed in the dark and pulled it down quickly again before collapsing back into place. |
